Times photographer Chester Higgins Jr. uses a vantage point on the Queensboro Bridge to capture spectators watching marathon runners moving up First Avenue on Nov. 4, 1990.

“On an unseasonably warm day, perfect for almost anything but a marathon, Douglas Wakiihuri of Kenya and Wanda Panfil of Poland showed only minor discomfort, breaking away from their strongest challengers long before the finish line in Central Park to win the 21st New York City Marathon,” The Times reported. “While their times were far off course records, they reflected a brave assault on the difficult course through the five boroughs as more than 25,000 starters experienced temperatures reaching 73 degrees, the warmest for the race since 1985.”

The two winners each earned $26,385 and a Mercedes-Benz. For the 27-year-old Wakiihuri, much of the race was run in cruise control. "It was hot, but I didn't notice it as I was running," Wakiihuri said. "Up to 20 miles, I did not have to run so hard. I was just relaxing, and I had a little energy left."

This made-to-order image is printed on giclée archival photo paper and is available framed or unframed. Framed photography comes ready to hang with a removable wire attached to the back. Choose from a lightweight ayous wood or a gold or silver metal frame to customize the frame best suited to your space. The print comes from The New York Times’s extensive archives, known as the “morgue,” which houses more than five million photographic prints that date back to 1905. It is available exclusively from The Times Store.
